How to Choose the Right AC Unit for Your Home

Selecting the right air conditioning system for your home is a significant decision that affects your comfort, budget and energy use for years to come. With so many options available, the process can feel overwhelming. This guide walks you through the essential factors to consider so you can make an informed choice that keeps your home cool and your energy bills in check.

1. The Critical Importance of Proper Sizing

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is choosing the wrong size air conditioner. Cooling capacity is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) per hour or in "tons," where one ton equals 12,000 BTUs per hour. An improperly sized unit leads to a host of problems:

  • Too Small: A unit that is too small for your home will run continuously and struggle to reach the temperature you set. That means poor comfort on the hottest days and extra wear that can shorten the system's life.
  • Too Large: An oversized unit cools the house quickly and then shuts off, a pattern known as short-cycling. That may sound efficient, but it keeps the system from running long enough to remove humidity, leaving your home cool but clammy. The constant starting and stopping also puts extra stress on the compressor and other components.

To size a system accurately, a professional HVAC contractor should perform a Manual J load calculation. This analysis looks at your home's square footage, insulation, window types and orientation, local climate and more. At Spartan Mechanical, we perform a Manual J load calculation on every installation, and we finish every install by measuring and balancing static pressure so the ductwork can actually deliver the air the new system is designed to move.

2. Understanding Energy Efficiency (SEER2 Ratings)

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio measures how much cooling an air conditioner delivers over a typical cooling season compared with the electricity it uses. A higher rating means a more efficient unit and, usually, lower electric bills.

Since January 1, 2023, air conditioners and heat pumps in the United States are rated with SEER2, an updated test procedure that uses more realistic airflow resistance than the old SEER test. SEER2 numbers therefore look a little lower than SEER numbers for the same equipment. The U.S. Department of Energy also sets minimum efficiency standards by region, and Oklahoma is in the Southeast region. Here, a new split-system central air conditioner must be rated at least 14.3 SEER2 if it is under 45,000 BTU/h (most homes), or at least 13.8 SEER2 for larger systems. In the Southeast, these minimums apply to equipment installed on or after January 1, 2023.

ENERGY STAR certified split-system central air conditioners must reach at least 15.2 SEER2 and 12.0 EER2, and the most efficient variable-speed and ductless systems are rated well above that.

Higher-efficiency units usually cost more upfront, but the energy savings can offset part or all of that difference over the life of the system, especially in a hot Oklahoma summer. When choosing a new AC unit, weigh the upfront cost against the long-term savings for your home and how long you plan to stay in it.

3. Don't Overlook Noise Levels

How loud an air conditioner runs has a big effect on how happy you are with it. If the outdoor unit sits near a bedroom window or a patio, a noisy unit can be a real disturbance. Manufacturers publish sound ratings in decibels (dB), and a lower number means a quieter unit. Variable-speed and inverter-driven systems spend much of their time running at low speed, which usually makes them quieter than single-stage units. When comparing models, check the sound ratings.

4. Reliability and Installation Quality

An air conditioner is a major investment, so you want equipment with a solid track record. At Spartan Mechanical, we install high-efficiency inverter systems including Midea, TCL and TuttoKool, and we service all major brands.

Even the most reliable AC unit will not perform well if it is installed poorly. Proper installation matters as much as the equipment itself: correct sizing, a correct refrigerant charge, sealed connections and ductwork that can move the right amount of air. Our trained technicians take the time to get those details right on every HVAC replacement we do.

5. Considering Your Home's Unique Needs

Finally, think about changes you have made to your home that affect your cooling needs. If you have upgraded your windows, added insulation or sealed air leaks, your home may need less cooling capacity than it did, and you might be able to downsize. If you have added a room or finished a basement, you may need more capacity, or a ductless mini-split for the new space. If you also want to replace your heating, a heat pump can handle both jobs with one system.
